What does unset SESSION_MANAGER do in vnc’s xstartup file?

I am configuring my ubuntu server to be able to VNC into it, and within the xstartup file, I can see the line unset SESSION_MANAGER.

I have googled around but can’t seem to find what unset SESSION_MANAGER does. What does unset SESSION_MANAGER do in the .vnc xstartup file?
